Super Mario Bros on the Wii

Nintendo’s new Super Mario Bros game for the Wii is a side-scrolling platform game which has been critically acclaimed and has made best seller lists across Europe. It is the first Super Mario Bros since the arcade game to feature simultaneous multiplayer play. Players can play as either Mario, Luigi, or a choice of two Toad characters. Along with the usual Mario series items, as well as the Mini Mushroom from the last game, new items have been added: The Propeller Suit, which allows players to fly; the Ice Flower, which allow players to freeze enemies with ice balls; and the Penguin Suit which, on top of the Ice Flower’s ability, allows players to slide along the ground and across water as well as have better control on ice and in water.

Retro Nintendo Mini Gameboy Games

In keeping with my retro toys theme this week, I bring you the Gameboy Mini Classics from Nintendo. Hailing from the days when your ‘portable’ game player required a separate hold-all to carry the thing, my gameboy helped me pass time on many boring car journeys. These little gems are far more portable, and while the graphics will never rival those of the latest mobile gaming devices, you can while away the hours with a choice of three classic games!

Choose from Mario’s cement factory, Super Mario Bros or Donkey Kong Jnr – each equally addictive and guaranteed to transport you back to the eighties.

As the hype around the new Wachowski movie heats up it was only a matter of time before the electric slot car set was released. The GO! Speed Racer slot car racing system is produced by Carrera and is available later in the month. The set includes the Mach 5 and Racer X Street vehicles, both with working LED front lights. The Nintendo Wii is undoubtedly one of the best games consoles we’ve played, but for many of us Nintendo just can’t reproduce the magic of the original Mario games. Lucky for us Firebox are trying to help recreate the magic with the Super Mario Bros Sound FX keyrings.

Halsall Toys have the X Factor

X Factor may have just finished, but British toy producer Halsall have came up with the answer to help fill the void. The X Factor board game allows up to 6 players to experience the journey each contestant takes on the way to the final.

Travelling round the board competitors will pass through recognizable locations including auditions, boot camp, the judge’s houses and then the grand final. Start by choosing from 6 potential X Factor champions including Mikey “the cute male vocalist” and Angels the ambitious girl group.

Played around the electronic judge’s console, featuring flashing lights, sound-alike judges voices and the instantly recognisable theme tune. Whilst making the way round the board players must answer questions and collect votes, which can be used to buy funky new haircuts and outfits helping prepare the player for their shot at the coveted recording contract.
